Jesus calls us to be and make disciples (Matthew 28:18-20), and growing as a disciple of Jesus can't happen without authentic relationships (Acts 2:42-47). Disciples are people who believe the gospel of Christ, belong to His body, are being changed to be like Jesus through His word by the Spirit, and are sent out together with other disciples on His mission. Our intergenerational "First Communities" are one way we're trying to live as a family of disciples on mission together. Our First Communities engage us in life together on 3 levels:
- A family meal: Each community of families, married couples, singles, college students, retirees, etc. (folks of all ages) meets together regularly for prayer and conversation over an informal "family style" meal. Anyone and everyone is welcome to our First Community meals, where we gather every other week!
- Men's and women's discipleship groups: We encourage every member of the church to gather with a smaller, same-gender group every other week (alternating with the family meal). These men's and women's groups are meant to build us up in Christ through mutual discipleship, accountability, and prayer for one another and those who need to know Jesus. Since real discipleship requires deep and trusting relationships, these groups are only open to those who have committed to First EFC through membership. Feel free to explore membership with us!
- Living on mission together: We believe that we need to be participating in God's mission together. The relationships we have with each other around the gospel and with those who need Christ should be the conduit for making our message about Jesus plausible to a watching world (John 13:34-35, 17:20-23). Disciples are sent out "on mission" to share the gospel just as Jesus Himself was sent out by God the Father (John 20:21).
